Nada más realista, de hecho, que poner a un payaso de candidato a la presidencia. La democracia del siglo XXI es aquí una encuesta eterna, la del Barómetro Permanente de Opinión, la herramienta online que veinticuatro horas al día, siete días a la semana, refleja fielmente el estado del Estado de opinión. Un pueblo conectado a Internet quizá no necesite elecciones, pero circo siempre le hará falta, sobre todo cuando es un pueblo sin pan. Con todo, el payaso Cucaracho es algo más que un artista del espectáculo; se trata de la mayor amenaza al statu quo que el país aquí retratado haya conocido en más de una década. Esta es una novela de payasos y, por lo tanto, lo único que podría criticársele son los calambres de la risa que procurará al lector. Claro que, como todo el mundo sabe, los payasos son seres tristes, y más triste aún es que esta farsa sobre un país corrupto e impotente cualquiera se parezca tanto a la vida en tantos países de verdad. Sin embargo, no hay que olvidar que, como dice uno de los distinguidos farsantes de este libro que reflexiona sobre sí mismo, el gran descubrimiento de la novela moderna es que la infelicidad vende.
